POWER COSTS will increase following Energex decision

VETO Jimboomba Times 21Mar12-p13VETO group high hopes and expectation that sense would prevail and Minister Mark McArdle would reject the Energex proposed second Loganlea to Jimboomba 110kV powerline crashed Tuesday evening when a media release from the Minister advised that he has approved this powerline.

Read that media release here.

Recent information released showed that rising power costs are largely caused by new infrastructure construction costs and not the maligned carbon price / tax.

Logan City Council have supported VETO's efforts for four years to find a better solution to our power needs for the future - one that is both less costly and one which causes less environmental harm.

VETO believed new government was supporting our community in calling for a review of the Energex proposed second Loganlea to Jimboomba 110kV powerline.

"The FIAR [Energex Final Interim Assessment Report proposal] is in contradiction to key planning and legislative documents, carries out a damaging environmental precedent through incompatible land use and in no way represents best practice in environmental, social and cultural standards expected in Australia in the 21st Century. Where other viable options exist, a project with as many fundamental flaws in policy, application and public opinion should not be considered."

WORDS from The Honourable Mark McArdle will not in any way compensate for / offset the environmental harm caused by construction as planned.

Mr McArdle said the conditions are:
• clearing of remnant vegetation is kept to a minimum
• where possible, large trees in close proximity to the Logan River will be pruned rather than removed
• a riverbank protection strategy is developed and implemented for sections of the riverbank where structures are located
• appropriate revegetation and landscaping is undertaken to minimise environmental impacts around structures
• the design of poles and any associated works – such as green poles or shadowline conductors -  include measures to minimise the impact on visual amenity, and
• in cooperation with Logan City Council, like-for-like vegetation offsets will be undertaken within the Logan City Council area.

A very disappointing decision for our community, Logan City Council, Logan River heath and wildlife that will be displaced such as federally listed koala and quoll.

Imagine if the money were invested in renewable energy!. Instead we are committing to an obsolete energy process based on old industrialised processes. Time to take our energy generation into 21st century.
